Concrete Alchemy at Art Whino

Concrete Alchemy is a tour of 15 visual artists visiting five major urban centers on the East Coast. It is the first tour that creatively combines gallery shows, public panel discussions and numerous murals to present the artists' unique approach to public arts.

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 - National Harbor, MD / Washington, DC

The art of Concrete Alchemy will be presented through slideshow of photographs of Ricardo Barros and public panel discussion. The event will start at 7 pm. After 10 pm, the artists will be presenting their work in Cue Bar on 1115 U Street NW, Washington DC 20009. This live demonstration of the artistic process will include customizing of hats and sneakers. The party is organized in collaboration with SolSource.

Friday, May 23rd, 2008 - National Harbor, MD

The tour will officially end with a gallery exhibit opening at Art Whino on Friday, May 23, 2008 from 6 pm to midnight. The audience will have chance to view artists' recently finished canvases and a slideshow of photographs from the previous days of the tour. These artists, who are major driving force in the contemporary urban arts, were carefully selected. Their work dictates the direction of future developments in mural art, graffiti and street art. It is not only for their technical perfection of painting with aerosol but also for their unique artistic approach to murals and public art. They possess the unique secrets of alchemists who transform one element into another. Under their touch, sterile concrete explodes, and a fresh, new organic nature sprouts through the cracks. As it develops into a dynamic and colorful forest, it presents us - the inhabitants - with new, pure life.

Rant: I love Subway's Five Dollar Footlongs... Quiznos, not so much

Last weekend when I was home for my mom's 50th birthday, our friend Clare told my dad he needed to start giving me more money for food (Thanks, Clare!) when I told her how I get a $5 footlong from Subway at least three times a week. I'm a big eater, and if I can get a great sub that'll take care of me for lunch and that mid-afternoon snack for a fiver- awesome! Hearing that Quizno's was matching the promotion, Brad and Andrew dragged me to check it out. Let's claim false advertising- none of the subs from Quizno's were actually $5- only the most very basics. Very disappointing! (Though Quizno's does have fountain Diet Mountain Dew so they do receive 1 bonus point in my book...)

Moral of the story? Choose Subway, Eat Fresh!

On Saturday May 10th at 10pm, head on over to the Rookery to raise money for Mark's Run in support of Juvenile Diabetes research. The 5k is Saturday morning but join the gang on Saturday night to "replenish your fluids, and to stretch your creamy hamstrings on the dance floor to the life-support tunes provided by Dr. Robot." A beloved brother, son, classmate, and friend, Mark's strength in fighting diabetes taught those around him that life is not measured in years but in character. The money raised through Mark's Run directly benefits the Joslin Diabetes Foundation, the global leader in Diabetes research, education and care and dedicated to finding a cure. Politikini: Disturbing but brilliant

Kudos to Politikini for giving me nightmares tonight. Made in the USA, Politikini offers crystal encrusted bikinis with your Presidential hopefuls name on the rear... a solid way to "get behind your favorite candidate" for just $49! Maybe we should change the "grassroots" movement to beach bum stride of pride. Although the picture above shows McCain, I couldn't actually purchase one- only Obama and Clinton. Kind of disappointing! After what we did with the FFP bikini, imagine what we could do with this!
Now, who do you think has the hottest supporters? Obama, McCain or Clinton? TBD
